Is Amazon Prime Worth It in the UK?
An honest breakdown of what Prime actually costs you per month, what you get, and the households it genuinely does not suit.
What you actually pay
Prime in the UK is sold two ways: monthly, or annually for a chunk less over the year. Amazon runs a 30-day free trial, and students get a longer trial plus a reduced rate after it. If you only want it for one big shopping spree or a house move, the trial alone may be all you need, as long as you remember to cancel.
The honest way to judge the price isn't the headline figure but how many of the benefits you would actually use in a normal month.
What you get, and what most people use
The membership bundles a lot together, but usage tends to cluster around a few things.
- Free next-day (often same-day) delivery. The benefit nearly everyone actually uses. If you order from Amazon more than a couple of times a month, this alone can cover the cost against paying delivery each time.
- Prime Video. A genuine streaming service with some strong originals. If it replaces another subscription, that changes the maths entirely.
- Prime Music, Photos, Reading and Prime Gaming. Nice extras that few people join for but many quietly enjoy.
- Prime Day and early deal access. Useful if you time bigger buys around it, easy to ignore otherwise.
Who it genuinely isn't worth it for
We would rather talk you out of it than sell you a subscription you'll forget to cancel. Prime is poor value if you order from Amazon only a few times a year, never stream video, and tend to plan purchases rather than needing them next day. In that case, paying standard delivery on the occasional order costs far less than a year of membership.
The quick self-test
Count your Amazon orders in a typical month and ask whether you would use Prime Video. Two or more orders a month, or regular streaming, and it usually pays for itself. Fewer than that, and the free trial for a specific need is the smarter move.
The verdict
For regular Amazon shoppers, and anyone who would use Prime Video, it comfortably pays for itself, mostly on delivery alone. For occasional, plan-ahead shoppers who never stream, it's not worth it, and the free trial covers any one-off need. Start with the trial, use it properly for a month, then decide with your own order history in front of you.
