Amazon Family: The Nappy Discount, With Real Maths
The 20% nappy subscription saving sounds great. We worked out what it is actually worth against supermarket own-brand.
What Amazon Family actually is
Amazon Family is a free add-on for Prime members. Its headline benefit is a subscription discount on nappies and some baby products through Subscribe & Save, on top of the usual Subscribe & Save saving. It also brings occasional baby-specific deals and a baby wishlist with a completion discount.
The key thing to understand: the nappy saving comes through a repeat subscription, not a one-off purchase. It rewards buying the same thing on a schedule, which is exactly how nappies get bought anyway.
The real maths, honestly
The discount is worth having, but it is not magic. Whether it beats a supermarket own-brand depends on three things: the specific branded nappy, the per-nappy price after the subscription discount, and how the pack size compares. Premium branded nappies on subscription can still cost more per nappy than a well-rated own-brand from a supermarket.
So the fair comparison is not brand-on-subscription versus brand-at-full-price. It is brand-on-subscription versus the own-brand you would otherwise buy, worked out as pence per nappy.
When it is genuinely worth it
- You already have Prime, so the add-on itself costs nothing.
- You have settled on a branded nappy your baby gets on with, and want it to arrive automatically.
- The per-nappy price after both discounts beats what you would pay for that same brand elsewhere.
When to skip it
If you are happy with a highly-rated supermarket own-brand, that will often still win on pure pence-per-nappy. Amazon Family shines on convenience and on locking in a saving for a brand you are committed to, not on always being the cheapest nappy in Britain.
The verdict
If you already pay for Prime and have chosen a branded nappy, Amazon Family is close to a no-brainer: it is free to add and quietly trims a recurring cost. Just do the pence-per-nappy sum against a good own-brand before assuming it is always cheapest. The convenience is real, the saving is real, but it is a sensible saving, not a miracle.
