Most homes have a drawer of batteries and a vague sense of guilt about them. The honest truth is that neither rechargeable nor disposable wins outright. It depends on what the battery powers, how often, and how much you hate faffing with a charger. The short answer
Rechargeables win on anything hungry. Game controllers, wireless mice, kids' toys, camera flashes and torches you actually use all chew through disposables, and that is exactly where rechargeable AAs and AAAs pay for themselves within a handful of cycles.
Disposables win on slow, low-drain jobs. A wall clock, a TV remote, a smoke alarm, a rarely-used weighing scale. A good alkaline cell can sit there for years, and lithium disposables from the likes of Energizer hold their charge even longer, which matters for anything you forget about until it beeps at 3am.
The cost-per-use maths

The charger is half the purchase
A cheap charger that blindly dumps current will cook your cells and shorten their life. A smart charger that monitors each cell individually, and ideally lets you charge odd numbers of batteries rather than forcing pairs, is the bit that makes rechargeables actually last. GP, Duracell and Energizer all sell sensible chargers, and it is one of the few places where spending a little more genuinely pays off over the years.
One quiet caveat: proprietary rechargeable packs, like those in some Ring doorbells and security cameras, are their own thing. You are not swapping AAs there, so factor the recharge routine, or a spare pack, into whether that gadget suits you.
Own-brand versus the big names
This is where money hides in plain sight. Amazon Basics rechargeables are frequently rebadged versions of well-regarded Japanese cells and tend to perform close to the premium brands for noticeably less. For disposables in low-drain kit, own-brand alkalines are often perfectly good; you are paying Duracell partly for the copper-top reassurance.
The sensible split for most homes: own-brand or Amazon Basics rechargeables for the everyday drawer, and premium lithium disposables reserved for smoke alarms, car key fobs and anything you truly cannot afford to have die quietly.

Do not mix old and new cells, or different brands, in the same device; the weakest one drags the rest down and can leak. Do not leave flat alkalines sitting in a gadget for months, because that white crusty leak ruins battery compartments. And never bin batteries with general waste.
